Southern Fried Onion Rings Recipe

Description

Crispy onion rings make a great appetizer, or a great side dish for your favorite hot dogs, burgers, and so many more items. They’re easy to make, crispy, and fresh Vidalia Onions make them taste great.

Ingredients

1 or 2 medium sized Vidalia Onions, or any sweet type onion.
3/4 cup All-Purpose Flour
1/3 cup Cornstarch
1 Tablespoon Baking Powder
1 teaspoon Salt
1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper
1 medium Egg
3/4 cup Buttermilk
Oil for frying.


Instructions

Place the flour in a zip-lock type bag or medium bowl.
Add the cornstarch.
Add the baking powder.
Add the salt.
Add the pepper.
Secure the bag and shake well to combine the dry ingredients.
Slice the onions as desired.
Place sliced onions in the bag of flour. Secure the bag. Toss gently to coat the slices.
Remove the slices and place on a wire rack or dish. Let sit and dry for 15 minutes.
Pour remaining flour from bag into a medium sized mixing bowl.
Add egg.
Add buttermilk.
Stir well to combine and make a batter much like pancake batter.
Dip onion slices in the batter. Drain well.
Place onions in hot oil. Fry until lightly browned on bottom.
Turn the slices as needed and continue to fry until lightly browned all over.
Remove when done and place on wire rack to cool slightly.
Serve warm.

Notes

I used a cast iron skillet over Medium heat on my stove top to fry mine. Add about an inch of cooking oil, and let rise to about 350F degrees. Be careful, oil will be hot of course. Keep any children away from the stove while you’re making these.
