I have a question she made chicken salad that was absolutely to die for, the problem is I never got a chance to ask her how she made it. I do know she boiled chicken breast but the problem is she cooked the dressing that she put in it would you happen to know what else I would need to make this. Thank you so much for taking your time to answer me back.

I was looking for some recipes that my North Carolina Mom and Aunt would make. They have both passed. I found your Chicken Pastry (or Chicken and Dumplins. It was described step by step so I could follow it. You actually had precise measurements. That is one thing that Mom and Aunty could not tell me. Thank you for keeping the old recipes alive.

Can you make an old fashion banana cake? Aunty was known for this, but she would not fork over the recipe.

  27. Carol Byars says:

Being from the South, I’m always interested in any website with recipes of some of my favorites from childhood. I’m fairly new to this site but have found several great recipes that my family loves.
I’d love to see one of my all time favorites featured here……chicken and dumplings. Not the canned biscuit kind or the store bought kind (heaven forbid!) but the homemade silky kind of dumplings that only my mother could make. I’ve tried but have been unsuccessful in duplicating them….maybe you could help! Thanks!

  28. Tori R. says:

We moved to SC from Missouri almost two years ago now and in attempt to familiarize myself with southern cooking, I happened upon your site. I have made just about everything, but our favorites are definitely the fried pork chops and the Cheerwine cobbler. My son has gone so far as to say that he never wants a cake for his birthday again….just Cheerwine Cobbler! A request I will most happily oblige. I love your stories, your recipes and your site. Thanks for making my transition to southern living easier. Happy Birthday! “Hear, my son, and accept my words, that the years of your life may be many.” Proverbs 4:10

  34. Brenda says:

I love your site! I would like to see more in the “canning-freezing” section. Especially if you can “cold pack”, then hot water can fresh garden veggies. We are planning on adding a straw bale garden to our small “in dirt” garden this spring. I want to be able to save as much as I can of the veggies without over cooking them.
Keep up the great recipes! 😀

  35. Karen M says:

I would love to see “cooking for two” recipes. Thanks!

  36. Steve R says:

My family and I love the salisbury steak recipe. I did add an ingredient to the recipe. I like bell peppers so I added about 1/2 cup to the recipe.
We also love the baked beans. I do have a question with this recipe. I decided to try and can the beans and after I did the beans have a sour after taste, do you know what is causing this? They are not spoiled because I had a jar of beans the same night I made them and they had the sour after taste. Besides that they still taste wonderful.

  37. Annie says:

    Steve,

My favorite recipe is the white icing. I tried it and actually didn’t burn it or under cook like I usually do most things. It turned out perfect and I used it on some cupcakes for some friends and they loved it too. Your instructions and photos are amazing. You are great at what you do, as always.

Thanks, and keep up the good work.

    • Babs Roberts says:

CORNBREAD DRESSiNG!!!!!!! Your recipe is FAB-u-Lous!! I am not usually the one to make the dressing but had to this year. Used yours. PERFECT!! Made enough to freeze a batch and actually had it last night 1/7/2014. It was so cold here in Georgia and this was excellent…

Have to cast a second vote though for the homemade biscuits your Mama made…I made those too during the holidays and froze some….the recipe reminds me of MY grandmother. In my little girl’s eyes I can still see her standing in her apron, using the deep WWII bowl with the blue ring around it gathering the flour in her hands and rolling the dough. To me there was nothing better than having a warm biscuit and some butter and syrup on a cold afternoon! So, Congrats to you for your win…..and whether or not I win, I am determined to learn how to can this year! Happy New Year with many blessings…You have blessed my life…Thank You!

  43. Tracy R. says:

I love, love your southern green beans recipe. It helped me make ’em like my mom does. I would love to see more soups/stews and maybe desserts. I enjoy your blog because your sincerity and love for others and food really comes through. 🙂

  44. Sherry says:

Just found this site last week when searching for a pinto bean recipe – the one you have is the best, but since then I’ve also tried the salisbury steak, buttermilk biscuits & ham bone beans. They’re all good! Next, I’m going to try that pie crust. I’ve always wanted to make my own pie crust, but it looked so hard. Thanks for making it look easy.

Hmmm – how about good, old-fashioned fried chicken? My grandmother used to fry chicken that would put KFC, Bojangles & Popeyes to shame, but I never learned how. Mine is OK (kind of) if you eat it right away, but the crust is soggy when it cools.

Thanks for this site – I’m lovin’ it!

  45. Sharon Cherry says:

Congratulations on your two year anniversary!! While I have enjoyed almost every recipe that has been posted, but my most favorite one is the Adam’s Original Red Velvet Cake Recipe. Hi Steve,
My favorite recipe so far is Annie’s Christmas fruitcake. It was such a great story as to how you got the recipe to start with and also the recipe was easy and sounds like an ice box fruitcake we had as I was growing up in the little community of Bethesda N.C. I hope to get to try it real soon as I have seen the candied fruit on sale after the Christmas holidays. I have really enjoyed your articles very much.
